AMERICAN MARTIAL ARTS ORGANIZATION

MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES

Herein is written the Articles of membership in the American Martial Arts Organization. It is required that all members adhere to and respect the intent to which these Articles are stated. These Articles are approved by the Directors office and are subject to change only by a majority vote of the Review Board.

Article I. PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION

    1. The American Martial Arts Organization was founded on the principles of martial arts honor, courage, respect, and discipline. The primary goal of the Organization is to promote the unity of all styles and practitioners. It is our hope that someday all martial artists will recognize and appreciate the values and benefits of all other styles.

Article II. RECOGNITION OF RANK

    1. All members must accept and openly recognize other members rank and qualifications. For example a Black Belt in one style or city will be accepted as a Black Belt by all members and schools. It will be the responsibility of the member requesting recognition to support his/her claim of rank with certificates and a demonstration of skills.

Article III. CONDUCT

    1. All members are required to uphold the traditions of honesty, dignity, and respect to all other members. Serious violations of this simple code may result in a loss of membership privileges.

Article IV. RANK ADVANCEMENT

    A. Independent Students [those training on their own - not certified under a Black Belt member]

        1. Students must hold their highest rank for a period of three months before examination for advancement is permitted. If a student joins the Organization at the rank of Blue Belt and can demonstrate that he/she has held that rank for at least three months then a rank test may be given.

        2. Any Black Belt instructor in the American Martial Arts Organization can administer student exams.

        3. Students who are not currently training with an instructor may submit a video tape demonstrating their skills in all basics, kata (forms), and sparring. It is also required that the student enclose a complete outline of the basics and kata required from beginner to the belt level being tested.

    B. Instructors

        1. Black Belt members must verify that they have held their rank for the minimum time required.

            a. First Degree / one year

            b. Second Degree / two years

            c. Third Degree / three years

            d. Fourth Degree / four years

            e. Fifth Degree and higher / five years per rank

        2. Black Belts are not permitted to skip ranks

        3. Any Black Belt member may issue rank up to and including his/her current rank

        4. Black Belt video tape exams are permitted. Please submit the following:

            a. typed resume of training, experience, and philosophy

            b. typed outline of rank requirements from beginner to the level of Black Belt being tested

            c. video of Kata (forms) and sparring required for promotion (breaking and weapons optional)

        1. perform every kata from beginner to belt being tested

        2. three one minute rounds of sparring

        5. Judging

            a. safety - no one gets hurt

            b. form (kata) performance Project Self Defense - power, speed, and accuracy - use good  technique, strong basics, and don't skip any movements

            c. sparring - safety, focus and power

                (use realistic movements (either tournament style or practical self defense)

    ` 6. Examination fees

            a. All  Student testing fees are currently $35. All Black belt Testing Fees are $50. Rank testing fees will be reviewed annually by the Rank Review Board. All members will be notified in advance if an increase in testing fees is needed.

Article V. INSTRUCTORS AUTHORITY TO ISSUE RANK

    A. All Black Belt members may issue rank to their students

        1. Submit a list of student names for our database.

        2. Purchase American Martial Arts Organization student rank certificates (10 certificates for $15).

        3. Conduct examinations according to the rules and guidelines of your school.

        4. Issue certificates

        5. No, fees are required for students certified under the instruction of a Black Belt member. The above Student testing guidelines are for students training as independent members.

Article VI. SOVEREIGNTY OF MEMBER SCHOOLS

    A. All American Martial Arts Organization schools stand as independent entities. The Organization  will in no way dictate policy or participation guidelines for its members. Each school or member is recognized as having the authority to determine and develop its own training practices. No guidelines regarding type or style of martial art trained, student participation, or rank advancement for students will be issued by the Board of Directors.

Article VII CHARTER MEMBERSHIP

    A. Charter Membership is available to any existing AMO member instructor upon written  request.{Five year membership is $50.}

        1. Please submit the following:

            a. typed outline of your teaching experience

            b. explanation of your teaching qualifications and achievements

            c. check or money order for $15.00.

    B. Charter Members enjoy additional benefits.

        1. reduced cost of student rank certificates when purchasing more than one package

        2. 10% discount on Century and AMO martial art supplies

        3. advance notice of upcoming events

        4. charter members are empowered to certify other branches and schools.

Article VIII. AUTHORITY OF THE ORGANIZATION TO EVALUATE MEMBERS CONDUCT AND STATUS.

    A. In accordance with Article III., all members are required to conduct themselves in a manner that brings honor to the martial arts and the American Martial Arts Organization. The Board of Directors is authorized to periodically review each members status in the martial arts. Members  whose conduct is seriously unbecoming of a certified martial artist may have his/her membership privileges revoked. This, seldom used, measure may seem extreme but may be necessary for the benefit of other members.

Article IX. MEMBERS RESPONSIBILITY TO the American Martial Arts Organization

    A. The American Martial Arts Organization name and logo are owned by the Organization. Members are cautioned to use them only for the purposes of demonstrating rank certification and certifying students.

The American Martial Arts Organization is dedicated to these Articles and to its members. We will further strive to maintain the highest standards in the martial arts.

Membership in the American Martial Arts Organization is an honor and privilege. All members are expected to hold the highest standards of respect and dignity. Members are not required, however, to purchase student certificates or take rank exams. As a member you are encouraged to take full advantage of the services of the Organization. You have been given a five year membership. You may elect to use any service we offer at any time.

We are all equal under the arts. The only special consideration given to any member will be the respect afforded to ones rank. This privilege will be given to each member by each member. It is only proper that ones accomplishments in the Arts be recognized.

Members should never hesitate to write at any time. tell us what you think about the Organization, the martial arts, or even ask advise about training. We are always available to help you. Some members may wish to share training tips, philosophy, or articles for consideration in our newsletter with the Organization. Please submit any such information to us at any time. Other membership benefits may be available, all you have to do is ask.
